Healthcare Team Rolls
Nurse Practitioners (NPs)
The role of the Nurse Practitioner was first introduced in Aotearoa New Zealand in 2000
Nurse practitioners are autonomous highly trained clinicians with advanced nursing qualifications and years of experience. They are authorised prescribers under the Medicines Act with the same legal authority to prescribe medicines as doctor’s dentists, midwives and optometrists.
Nurse Practitioners diagnose, treat, prescribe and plan care independently – but through a nursing lens that is patient centered and holistic.
